Put more energy into your consonants. Singing requires your diction to be clear and precise. If you make your consonants more distinct, it will help immensely. Think of it like your singing your consonants slightly louder than your vowels. (Yes, vowels are important, but if the audience can't hear the consonants, then there are no words.)

Know which consonants are liquid and can be sung on pitch (l, m, n, ng); which are voiced (b,d, g, z, v, r, j (dg), zh, th (as in that)); and which are unvoiced (p, c (as in cat), t, k, q, s, f, ch, sh, th (as in think), x, h).

To understand the difference between voiced and unvoiced, try pronouncing each (don't just say the letter, try it with a word) with its counterpart:

b (bat) and p (pat)

d (done) and t (ton)

g (grass) and c or k or q (crass)

z (zoo) and s (sue)

v (vat) and f (fat)

j (dg) (judge) and ch (church)

zh (vision) and sh (sheet)

th (that) and th (think)

You should find that the unvoiced consonants have a tiny explosion of air when you pronounce them, and the voiced will not.

Also, w and y are referred to as semi-vowels. When you sing a w (like wait) you start with an ';oooo'; sound. (In the International phonetic alphabet it is written as [u].) For y, say the word yuck. Most y's wil have the same feeling as that.

Lastly, something important that I learned from one of the greatest choral directors of all time Weston Noble:

Consonants should be 3 things:

1. Properly formed

2. On pitch

3. They should be short

This combined with pure vowel sounds should really help. I find that when I give more care to my consonants, my overall sound also improves. Don't let the fact that I sing opera turn you off from what I wrote. These are rules that all singers should follow. What makes singing different from playing an instrument is the fact that we have words. If no one can understand you, no matter what style you sing in, then you aren't getting what the composer wrote across to the listener. How to sound clear when singing?

This is simple. Everyone who sings has this problem, you are not on your own. You will need to open your jaw more. Every morning do big yawn movements this should make it easier to get around. Before you sing hum, this should clear your throat and have a drink of water. This should help. Also go outside (for the love of god dont do this inside) and open your mouth as wide as you can, and scream at the top of your voice, shout if it helps as well. Hopes this helps. Im a singer and had the same problems. All singers have this.
enunciate your words and clear your throat.
