I borrowed a Yamaha Alto Sax from my school, I can play it ok-but when I do it dosent have that clear sound... how would I be able to get that? Thank you =)How do I get a clear, crisp, fresh sound from my Alto Sax?
The general sound you get from a saxophone comes from the Mouthpiece-Ligature-Reed Combination.
What mouthpiece are you playing on?
The type of mouthpiece you play on heavily determines the type of sound your instrument can put forth. The instrument is basically an amplifier for whatever comes out of your mouthpiece.
By far the most popular saxophone mouthpiece is the Selmer Paris S80 C*. High school students to professionals use this model, and there is a good reason why. The C* features a square-cut cross section in the chamber of the mouthpiece, which results in a more focused, clearer sound. This is an excellent ';classical'; mouthpiece, meaning that it is has a darker sound when compared to other mouthpieces. You can find it anywhere from $90 to $120.
With Ligatures, any of the Rovner series ligatures are great for a nice, dark focused sound. If you want something a little bit brighter, try a Vandoren Optimum Ligature or any standard quality metal ligature.
Reed type makes a difference as well. Vandoren reeds are long considered a great standard, but Hemke reeds produce a very clear sound as well. With Vandoren, the classic Vandoren (blue box) are very good, and the V-12 (silver box), which were just released for saxophone, are even better. If you are paying more than $25.00 for a box of regular blue box Vandorens, you are getting ripped off. I hope this helps! How do I get a clear, crisp, fresh sound from my Alto Sax?
I also play an alto sax.
Try to blow the air straight from your stomach,
and don't puff up your cheeks.
Keep your mouth tight, and don't loosen up, or else your sounds will go flat.
Set your back straight, and use a high- quality reed, 3's sounds great.
your emboucure first off, make sure you have enough in your mouth
and reeds.you need a high quality reed to play good.
