Learn to buzz well with only your lips, and you will find your trumpet sound will be much more strong and beautiful.

Here is how to buzz with only your lips. Taken from ';All About Trumpet'; by Jonathan Harnum.

1. Look in the mirror and smile at yourself.

2. Take a deep breath.

3. Place your lips together as though saying ';mmmm';. Keep the corners of your mouth tight like you just had a big bite of lemon.

4. Force the air in your lungs through your lips. Use your stomach muscles to help push the air out.

5. Hold the sound of the buzz steady for as long as you can.

6. Strive for a big, fat, steady sound.

7. Repeat for a few minutes. Don't forget to breath. ;-)

Once you've got that down, buzz some simple songs. It will be hard, but once you can do this you'll get a great sound on the trumpet. Once you can buzz songs without a trumpet/mouthpiece, try it with just the mouthpiece. It will be easier, but be careful not to jam the mouthpiece into your face.

Try googling a picture of what a good trumpet embouchure (mouth position) should look like. For even more in depth pictures, get a copy of ';Chops: Pictures of 480 top players' embouchures'; by Bill Spilka.

If none of that helps, it may just be that your are practicing too hard. If you continually work in the high range or for very long periods of time, you lips will get tired and your sound will be airy. If this is the problem, the solution is simple: take a short brake and all will be better. How can i get a clear sound on my trumpet?
What happens if you try to buzz on the mouthpiece. can you get a clear tone at the mouthpiece?

If yes - Practice a lot just with the mouthpiece. Play every piece or practice study you do on the mouthpiece to start with, and then take that sound and feeling on to the trumpet.

If no - You need to improve your buzz. You should get a ';visualizer';. (Try to image Google ';trumpet visualizer'; and you will see what this tool is)

There are many exercises for this visualizer. But one rule is Crucial. You must blow from the lips and out. Don't blow from the body and out.

To establish this, you can make a long buzz in the visualizer, then put a finger in front of the lips so you close the airstream, but still blow against the ';stopping'; finger. Then suddenly move the finger away and release the airstream, but continue to make a buzz.

This will help establish a fine clear buzz.
